The Gossip

SHORT

Written & Directed by Rolfin Nyhus.

Facebook: www.facebook.com/thegossipshortfilm

Set in Margate, a coastal town in the South East of Britain, The Gossip explores the moral and interpersonal effects of gossip between two best friends.

Meesha is a bolshie, brash and intelligent working-class young woman concerned about Kirsty – a vulnerable friend – who is slipping into substance abuse.

Kirsty, sensitive and artistic, is ‘falling through the cracks’ of a fractured social care system. She often isolates herself from her friends and the outside world. Her problems are exacerbated by her relationship with Jimmy; a charmless, misogynistic slob and small-time drug dealer who uses Kirsty’s dependency to manipulate and control her.

We follow a series of events in which Meesha tells a guy she is dating, Tony, about her deteriorating friendship with Kirsty. Unbeknownst to Meesha and Tony, the frustration and anger Meesha expresses during their conversation may bring about the end of Meesha and Kirsty’s friendship and perhaps an even worse fate for Kirsty.

Careless talk and gossip occur in all walks of life and can create rifts in the closest of relationships. Repairing this damage requires compassion and understanding. Traits that are often most needed when they are least accessible. Healing a once loving relationship can be the hardest task of all.

Hollow Pond

SHORT

Directed by Rolfin Nyhus.

Facebook: www.facebook.com/hollowpond

Sironka, a mute boy tending goats on the Maasai Mara loses the herd whilst engrossed in a book, much to the annoyance of his elder siblings. Discovering signs of lion activity, his elder brothers head into the bush to hunt the beasts leaving a scorned and faint-hearted Sironka alone.

Hearing demonic voices, Sironka finds the courage to embark on a brave yet foolhardy journey to locate and help his brothers. Lost and afraid, he comes across an unexpected and fearsome force. Young and unarmed, he must outwit this foe to save himself and reunite with his family.

In this ‘coming of age’ gothic-mystery, one boy’s story echoes humanity’s struggle with the all-powerful and insidious prevalence of globalisation, money and greed.

Two Down

SHORT

Written & Directed by Rolfin Nyhus.

Facebook: www.facebook.com/twodownshortfilm

“Salt beef?”

Two feckless men attempt to complete a tabloid crossword in an old-school greasy spoon cafe in north east London.

Diggsy, 20-something, is a hard-working but unambitious lackey working six days a week for an unappreciative proprietor. One of the cafe’s regulars is Derek, 50-60. A pretentious wally with an inflated sense of self-worth who considers himself to be an erudite autodidact.

Derek frequents the cafe daily to sip coffee, show off his knowledge and help Diggsy complete the crossword, despite the fact the activity is having adverse effects on Diggsy’s customer service.

Ms. Mangetout, a hipster that happens to be passing by, pops in for coffee and a platter before quickly realising the gentrifying hordes haven’t yet colonised this pocket of the world.

Tae Kwon Joe is a straight-talking builder working on a nearby construction site. His ability to ‘tell it as it is’ inadvertently winds Derek up as the pair become embroiled in a definition of broiling.

Two Down is a slice of these characters lives, one day in a monotonous chain of others where the only thing changing is the date on the newspaper.
